Crossing the Nullarbor: What to Expect and How to Prepare

Thinking of crossing the Nullarbor? This iconic Australian road trip is often surrounded by myths and warnings, but the reality is far less daunting than many make it out to be.

How Long Does It Take to Drive the Nullarbor?

The journey from Norseman (the last town in Western Australia) to Ceduna (the first major town in South Australia) takes approximately 12 hours and 14 minutes. We chose to break it into three days for a more enjoyable experience:

  • Day 1: Norseman to Cocklebiddy (4–5 hours) – Camped at the “Off Highway Camp.”
  • Day 2: Cocklebiddy to 52k Peg Camp Area (3–3.5 hours) – Spectacular cliffside views over the ocean.
  • Day 3: Eucla to Ceduna (5–6 hours) – The final stretch.

Nullarbor Driving Safety Tips

  • Avoid Night Driving: Wildlife such as kangaroos, emus, camels, dingoes, and wombats make night driving risky. Plan to park before dusk and start driving after sunrise.
  • Check the Weather: During summer, temperatures can exceed 40°C, so prepare accordingly. Also be aware of excessive wind and wind direction. Strong headwinds can hugely increase fuel consumption as well as put extra strain on you vehicle. When camping at places like 52k Peg of other campsites that have little shelter from the wind you might find it worth just stopping for a look and photo opportunity and finding a more sheltered camp if the forecast is for strong winds. We use an app called Windy to check the wind conditions.
  • Fuel Up Regularly: Fuel is available at all stops, but prices can be steep—reaching $2.80 per liter at Nullarbor Roadhouse. The longest stretch between fuel stops is Norseman to Balladonia (2 hours), and the shortest is Eucla to Border Village (11 minutes). Occasionally roadhouse’s will run out of fuel so carrying a full jerry can and planning your fuel stops is highly recommended. We also use the Petrol Spy app to check prices in advance.
